NORCAL WOMEN'S SURF CLUB HOSTS 1ST WOMEN'S SURF FEST;
MTV SURF GIRLS WINNER TO HOST EVENT

SAN FRANCISCO (September 2, 2003) - The NorCal Women's Surf Club (NCWSC) will celebrate its two-year anniversary with a big day at the beach looking for even bigger waves. The club is hosting the NorCal Women's Surf Fest on Saturday, September 13 at Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica, including a women's surf contest, clinics, yoga, and more.

The NCWSC, comprised of more than 180 women from Northern California, is a grassroots organization joining the growing ranks of female surfers worldwide. In fact, the retail market for female surfing has equaled, and in some cases exceeded the men's marketplace in sales, according to the International Women's Surfing Organization.

"Shows like MTV's 'Surf Girls' and Hollywood's 'Blue Crush' are telling the world what we've known for years - women's surfing is a legitimate sport on the rise," said Anne Moellering, co-founder of NCWSC. "Through our club, we give women a way to pursue their passion for surfing plus be part of a community that supports them."

The Surf Fest will offer something for everyone, from beginners' clinics and novice events, to a contest featuring some of the best female surfers on the West Coast. Men are welcome to enter the "SF Style Session" - a Bay-to-Breakers-meets-surf-contest event - where they must surf in a skirt, dress or other female costume. "Style Session" contestants will be judged for their surfing prowess and costume style.

On land, the event will include surf-specific yoga, a raffle featuring surfboard prizes, and a beach clean up. An awards ceremony and dinner will follow, where winners will receive trophies and fresh leis. Details and entry forms are at www.ncwsc.com.

Adding to the excitement, Mary Osborne (professional longboarder and winner of MTV's 'Surf Girls') will be on hand to host and judge the day's events.

Sponsors of the NorCal Women's Surf Fest include apparel companies Carve Designs, Dickies Girls and Surf Chick; surfboard makers StickGirl Surfboards, Johnny Rice, Jon Wegener and Guy Takayama; surf shops Wise Surfboards and Aqua Surf Shop as well as Niman Ranch, Newman's Own Organics, the Cold Water Surf Club and others.

Partial event proceeds will be donated to local Surfrider Foundation chapters.

About Women's Surfing
Women's surfing stretches back two centuries, when it was common to see Polynesian maidens surfing in the Sandwich Islands. At times, women actually outnumbered their male counterparts at Hawaiian breaks.

In 1967, the Western Surfing Association created a division for women that honored "professionally-oriented super stars." A precursor of today's elite world tour, the women's division showcased child star Margo Godfrey, who won the World Title at age 15 on her way to becoming one of the greatest female surfing champions ever.

Today, through the efforts of contemporary surfers like Lisa Andersen, Rochelle Ballard, Layne Beachley, and Keala Kenneally, women are claiming their rightful place in elite lineups the world over. Women's surfing is now one of the fastest growing female sports on the planet.
